Tempo markings and their BPM
Sheet music often gives the tempo as an Italian word instead of a number. These are the usual ranges — composers and editions differ a little.
| Marking | BPM | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Largo | 40–60 | very slow, broad |
| Adagio | 66–76 | slow and expressive |
| Andante | 76–108 | walking pace |
| Moderato | 108–120 | moderate |
| Allegro | 120–156 | fast and bright |
| Vivace | 156–176 | lively |
| Presto | 168–200 | very fast |
How to practice with a metronome
- Find the song’s tempo first (every song page on SnapLyrics shows its BPM), then start at about 60–75% of it.
- Raise the tempo by 2–5 BPM only when you can play the passage cleanly three times in a row.
- Use eighth-note or triplet subdivisions to keep fast passages even, and the drum groove to practice feel.
How it works
- 1Set the tempo with the slider, the +/− buttons or by tapping along to a song.
- 2Choose the time signature, subdivisions and sound — or switch to the drum groove.
- 3Press Start (or the space bar). Start slow, then speed up a few BPM at a time.
